陳張莉 (b.1944~)
Jenny Chen (b.1944~)
Jenny Chen earned a Bachelor’s from National Chengchi University in Taiwan in 1968 and a Master’s in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in New York in 1990. Settling down and working in New York, having dedicated herself to art as she approached middle age, and venturing to the Big Apple alone to pursue studies, she forged a career for herself during an era of broad popularity and favor for abstract painting before settling back in Taiwan in 2020.
With her characteristic unfettered, bright abstract painting, Jenny Chen has established a distinctive personal style. To her, music and art are indivisible, and musical elements fill images with rhythm and flow. Years of dance training honed great command of her body, and the ebb and flow of nature provides creative inspiration for Chen’s nuanced chronicles of every change in an instant, so that colors can automatically flow and build up on the canvas to create captivating texture and thickness.
The artist is adept at employing the artistic language of the West to bring out the close relationship between her personal style and Chinese painting, from constant reflection on the myriad aspects of life through completely following her heart at this time. Chen has pursued stylistic change of creative spirit, employing diverse media and forms in the effort to translate inner feelings and emotions into the real world outside.
Since 1987 Jenny Chen has been featured in numerous exhibitions at private institutions and private galleries, including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Shanghai Art Museum (renamed China Art Museum), Lincoln Center in New York, International Contemporary Art Fair in Paris, the Grand Palace, and the 17th Asian International Art Exhibition in Seoul.
