Artist’s Statement
Where do one’s self and one’s body belong?
When reflecting on one’s body, or contemplating one’s own existence, does the focus fall on the same place?
In referring to our “self,” the self clearly jumps to the forefront of consciousness. Still, sometimes I feel like this stands in contrast to the physical body.
Of course, without the body there is no self.
The body is the self, yet it possesses a natural quality that eludes visual perception and resists conscious control. Within the body resides a dimension of nature that also connects with natural threats.
Ernest Hemingway said that the consciousness is like the part of an iceberg that pokes out of the water, while the unconscious is the massive portion that slumbers beneath the surface. Similarly, that which escapes the grasp of the self – namely, the unconscious – may constitute the greater portion of what one takes to be consciousness. Body and thought; unconscious and conscious. The human condition is perpetually caught between the cracks of such a duality.
While painting, I am intimately aware of this phenomenon. As I make contact with the picture, delineating lines, I sense as though I am tracing a body swaying inside this binary fissure. Simultaneously, it feels as though a beam of light is cast upon my unconscious. My thoughts and images seem to leap beyond the confines of my mind, unfolding across the canvas at lightning speed.
I attempt to crystallize this ever-shifting duality – this flux of movement and balance – on the canvas, capturing a fleeting moment. In the process of creation, the work dissolves and merges like melting ice, only to re-solidify upon the canvas. In doing so, it may preserve a record of otherwise invisible body and thought.
