Observation of nature as well as lived experience have long shaped the core of Chou Chu-Wang’s oeuvre. His Footprints: The Series of Stone awarded the 2003 Kaohsiung Awards Grand Prize and subsequently acquired by the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, presents finely rendered coastal landscapes whose traces of erosion become reflections on the gradual sedimentation of memory and perception. In 2007, his Naughty series earned top honors at the Taipei Arts Award, employing wry humor to portray unruly childhood figures and to probe the mischievous impulses that lie beneath everyday innocence. These works serve simultaneously as recollected imagery and as inquiries into the ambiguous dimensions of human nature – offering keen insight into social structures and formative experiences.
Rocks and sand have been enduring motifs throughout Chou’s body of works. From the fine detail grounded in observational realism of his early works, his style has evolved into a more personal visual language in which matter, memory, affect, and bodily experience are interwoven. Moving beyond representation of nature, through repetition and detailed depiction his images articulate the passage of time and changing mindsets. Over time, these materials take on symbolic weight, transforming rocks from static objects to projections of the mind, and allowing the viewer to perceive the life force that animates these seemingly quiescent forms.
